What is Handelsregister/Registre du commerce?

The Handelsregister (German) or Registre du commerce (French) is the Swiss Commercial Register which is an official federal database that contains all the information about all the registered businesses and legal entities in Switzerland. This register is a legal source of truth that enhances transparency, legal certainty, and public trust in commercial transactions.

Who Must Register in the Swiss Commercial Register?

Registration is required for: 

  • Limited Liability Companies (GmbH / Sàrl) 
  • Corporations (AG / SA) 
  • Partnerships and Sole Proprietorships exceeding CHF 100,000 annual turnover
  • Associations and Foundations involved in commercial activity

Freelancers and micro-entities may be exempt but can still register voluntarily for credibility.
